About

Meet the landlord.

Hello! I’m Anthony.

You know the feeling. You’ve studied English for years. You understand films, read articles, follow meetings. Then someone asks you a simple question and your mind goes completely blank.

I want you to know that it isn’t you. It’s how you’ve been taught.

I was born in Chester, a small Roman city between Liverpool and Manchester, where the pub is the heart of everything. It’s where you celebrate, commiserate, argue about football and put the world to rights over a pint. It’s also where English is at its best: quick, warm, full of humour, and packed with expressions no grammar book will ever explain.

    Fun fact

Not every pub is just a pub. A gastropub is known for its food, an inn once had rooms for travellers, and an alehouse served only beer. A free house belongs to no brewery, so it can sell any beer it likes.

    Fun fact

The Shambles was once York’s street of butchers: “shambles” were the benches they sold meat from. The word later came to mean a slaughterhouse, which is why “a shambles” now means a complete mess.

    Fun fact

Australians shorten almost everything: breakfast is brekkie, the afternoon is the arvo and a petrol station is a servo. Oh, and Russell Crowe? He was born in New Zealand.

    Fun fact

The red phone box was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of Battersea Power Station. Today a village can adopt an unused one for £1, and many have become tiny libraries.

I didn’t start out as a teacher.

Before teaching, I spent years in sales and technology, working with teams in both the UK and Germany, and then in the fuel industry. I sat through the meetings, made the calls and gave the presentations. So I know what professional English actually sounds like, and what it feels like to communicate in a language that isn’t your own (my German was hard-earned!).

In August 2018, I swapped England for Italy, trained as a teacher and found what I’d been looking for all along.

From lockdown videos to Pint of English.

When the pandemic shut the world indoors, I started filming short English lessons from home. People watched, shared and kept asking for more. Today, over 200,000 people follow Pint of English on Instagram and Facebook, and in 2023 I turned it into my own business.

From one trip to Rome to 200,000 followers.

Word at the bar

His method is fantastic because it brings together three things: conversation, which helped me loosen up and speak with more confidence; analysing videos, with summaries to prepare between lessons; and grammar, explained clearly and never boringly. Anthony is well prepared, patient and knows how to motivate you. I started out knowing next to nothing of the language, but I’m enjoying it more and more!

What my lessons feel like.

After years of living here, I know exactly where Italian speakers trip up: the false friends, the word order, the “I know it, but I can’t say it” moments. My lessons are built around:

  • Real conversation, not repetition drills
  • Authentic videos and articles on topics worth talking about
  • The idioms, phrasal verbs and nuance that make you sound natural, not translated

My goal is simple: to help you feel confident using English where it matters.

In the meeting, at the interview, and at the bar.
